People over 75 years of age are most at risk, suffering both the highest mortality rate and the most severe injuries.
In 2002 an estimated 500,000 people aged over 75 years of age attended accident and emergency departments as the result of a home accident.
By drawing the attention of older people and their carers to hazards and unsafe practices accidents and hospital admissions can be reduced.
Another aim of the home safety service is to enable older people to return home following a stay in hospital or to remain in their own home for longer instead of going in to residential care by making the home safer.
